Lions Foundation of Canada operates Dog Guides Canada, a national Dog Guide school that is one of the only schools in North America to train Dog Guides in four distinct programs. In addition to training Dog Guides for people who are blind or visually impaired, Dog Guides are also trained to meet the needs of Canadians with hearing or other medical or physical disabilities. Dog Guides are provided at no cost to qualified applicants from coast to coast, and the Foundation does not receive any government funding. The head office and training school is in Oakville, Ontario and there is a breeding and training facility in Breslau, Ontario.
Charity History:
Lions Foundation of Canada is a federally incorporated charitable foundation founded in 1983. Its mission is to provide service to Canadians with disabilities in the areas of mobility, safety and independence.
Further Information:
It costs approximately $20,000 to raise and train each Dog Guide yet Dog Guides are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. Applicants stay at the residential training school in Oakville for two to four weeks to train with their new Dog Guide and all costs are covered. It is through the donations of thousands of people from coast to coast that this is possible. |
