VON is a not-for-profit, national health care organization and registered charity offering a wide range of community health care solutions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. VON helps one million Canadians and their families each year through community based programs that help people of all ages cope with illness, injury, isolation, disability or the end of life, while living as independently as possible in the comfort of their own homes.

VON has a network of 16,000 staff and volunteers who provide services in 1,300 communities across the country. VON’s programs include visiting nursing, palliative care, volunteer visiting, caregiver support, adult day programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, Meals on Wheels, transportation programs, seniors’ wellness and exercise programs, and much more. Programs vary from one location to another depending on community health needs.

Charity History:

For over 100 years, VON has pioneered health services in Canada. We have a proud tradition of often being the first to identify emerging health and social needs and then providing innovative services that meet those needs. That is the way it has been since the founding of the Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada.

In the Canada of the late 1890s, nurses, doctors and hospitals were desperately needed in remote areas and in rapidly growing towns and cities. VON was officially formed in response to these needs in 1897, led by Lady Ishbel Aberdeen, wife of Canada’s Governor General at the time. From that day forward, VON has been part of the health and social fabric of Canada, providing care to generations of Canadians. For over a century, VON was there whenever Canadians needed us most, during times such as the Halifax Explosion of 1917, two World Wars, the Great Depression and the SARS crisis, and VON will continue to be there as new challenges emerge.

Further Information:

As our population ages, many older people are isolated and do not have adequate access to care. More and more people are filling the role of caregiver for family members in their homes. Chronic diseases are on the rise. Fortunately, VON staff and volunteers help relieve the burden of caregivers, providing care to people living in isolation, and enabling people to live at home with their families into the final days of life.
